Aims and likely Cross Border benefits of the project:

  • to socially stimulate and educate the older population, in the Castlederg and border areas, especially the most rural, isolated members of the community in health and well-being matters.
  • Reduced rural social isolation amongst the elderly population
  • Increased health awareness

Project Objectives:

  • To promote the establishment of a community based self-help group targeting health and well-being.
  • To encourage the building of partnerships with local peer groups
  • Support the development of already established groups i.e. Age Concern and Help the Aged
  • Encourage the use of advice and expertise from these groups as well as encouraging greater participation from statutory agencies
  • To encourage cross-community and cross-border activity and work in tandem with activities that have already been developed by peer groups
  • Increase contribution to the rural economy on a cross-border basis through the creation and development of cross-border links, networking and increased cross border activity and improved health and active lifestyles.
  • Work on community development issues surrounding the issues of discrimination and injustices that result in social exclusion and health inequalities
